Compostable versus Biodegradable: Do you know the
difference?
Compostable means the item will, under a managed composting
program: (1) break down to carbon dioxide, water, inorganic
compounds, and biomass at a rate similar to paper; (2)
disintegrate into small pieces within 90 days, so that the
original product is not visually distinguishable in the
compost; and (3) leave no toxic residue.
Biodegradable means that eventually the item will breakdown
by biological means. Aluminum cans will breakdown in ocean
water after about 175 years.

So which is better for the environment?
At Bay State Vending, Inc., we care about the
environment! We want to be good stewards of God’s green
Earth, and we want to help you in this effort. More and more
businesses are trying to mitigate their waste products or
lower their carbon footprint by using “green” products that
are eco-friendly. Bay State Vending, Inc. carries these
types of products. We have paper (not foam) cups and napkins
that naturally break down in landfills; we carry
compostable spoons, forks, and knives; and we carry compostable
plates in 6” and 9”. These items are mostly made from corn
starch, which slightly increases its price over the
non-compostable products. Please let us know if you would like
more information or if you would like to try these items for your
office. |
